Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery are terms commonly confused, however Disaster Recovery is actually a sub-section of the Business Continuity plan. Business Continuity, is very similar to the role of Risk Management, in that a BC plan will enable an organisation to mitigate the impact of any disruption to services. One of the most important tasks in building a Business Continuity and Disaster recovery plan is first understanding the business’s requirement and any non IT interlinking parts.
By looking at the key functions that need to be in place for the organisation to keep running, which will include non “IT” components (like telephones) and deciding how long your business can operate without them is a fundamental building block for the plan. This is called the RTO – Recovery Time Objective, which deals with the time it takes to get critical systems back and operational. When asked, a surprising number of companies state that they could live without their critical systems and services for a number of days, however when analysed in the cold light of day, it is services such as Email and websites and the links to sales and tracking systems that have a very short RTO – sometimes measured in minutes.
The second Building block is the RPO, the Recover Point Objective, which deals with the amount of data loss that the business can suffer. Again when asked, many companies state that backups once a day or even in extreme cases once a week are sufficient to protect their business. Most organisations under closer inspection need a much more frequent Restore Point Objective which can be measured in hours and in a number of cases minutes.
Regardless of the size of a company, BC and DR plans are essential, and Vissensa would recommend that for SME’s it is even more important as a large loss of data or outage of service, may cripple the business. Vissensa operate a range of BC and DR plans and solutions that can be tailored to the exact requirement of a business. We use leading hardware and software to develop our solutions and where hosted in one of our data centre facilities, is operated in a secure and complaint environment.
